Transformations!

OSE NEWS
June 24, 2013

Our Savior Logo          In our Gospel reading yesterday we heard about a man transformed, a man who had a legion of demons and a legion more of torment and who was transformed to a man sitting peacefully at his Savior's feet. It is a dramatic story of salvation and conversion and it fit well to hear it at the close of our week of Day Camp here at the church. We had 90 campers, 10 youth helpers, 10 College Counselors, and a dozen adult volunteers as well. Among that group as in any group of human beings, there was and is of course a legion of struggles and trials, as well as a legion of hopefulness and good. And as a group over the week at Day Camp we experienced the strength and hope that comes from Christ and that is so often found through being together as the body of Christ.

At Day Camp we saw transformation in many ways, such as a child scared to come to camp on Monday, who didn't want to leave on Friday, middle school students who showed up Monday with their "cool caps" on and by Thursday night had thrown them to the side and were singing the loudest and showing the most enthusiasm at the Thursday program, counselors and helpers who felt the exhausted joy of giving everything they have. So thank you to all who helped open wide the doors of God's house this week and be a part of God's transforming love at work through Day Camp!

As we look ahead to the summer, there is one important date we want to invite you all to put on your calendars as both a prayer request and as a possibility of being in attendance. At noon on Saturday, August 31st, Pastor Robert Schaefer will be installed as the fourth Bishop of the Florida/Bahamas Synod at St. Timothy's Church, in Lutz, FL (near Tampa). We are all invited and if you are interested we will work to arrange carpools or van rides, so reply to this email if you'd like to attend. The worship service will be a meaningful service of worship folding together in song, prayer, word, and meal, all of who we are as a synod and as God's people. As Bishop-Elect Schaefer said, "August 31st at noon is a time for us all to be Christians together as I will be installed as your regional pastor at St. Timothy's in Lutz (Tampa).  If this day is simply about me being made a bishop, then I am very fearful.  If this day is about our life together as a synod and about our being called from this gathering around word and sacrament to participate in God's mission to the world, then I am both strengthened and filled with joy!

And let God's transforming love be at work in your life and through you,

Pastor Shelly +              www.oursaviorelca.com

The Wideness of God's Mercy....

OSE NEWS

 Our Savior Logo

The "Wideness of God's Mercy", along with lots of activity, noise and fun, will be experienced this week at Our Savior, as Day Camp happens!   90 campers along with staff and volunteers will be gathering for another week of Day Camp, in which counselors from Lutheran Outdoor Ministries of Florida come to Our Savior to lead the camp.  For over 20 years, this has been a summer tradition not only for Our Savior but for our community, as about half of the campers are not members of Our Savior.  And each year we hear campers say, "This is the best camp all summer!"

To get a taste of all that goes on, stop by anytime this week, or come to the program Thursday night at 7 pm followed by an ice cream social to hear some of the great music and see the fun that goes on all week.  Many thanks to all our volunteers for the support they give, to all who donated supplies and to Ingrid Biessart for underwriting a large portion of the expense.

On Saturday, June 22, at 1pm, we get to, in a different setting, experience the "Wideness of God's Mercy" in a Memorial Service for Millie Clark.  This past early Friday morning, Pastor Clark's wife, Millie died following a brief hospital stay.  She was 94.  Pastor Clark and Millie have been an important part of the life of Our Savior for many years.  We hope you can join Pastor Clark and his and Millie's family as we remember her, celebrate her life and commend her into God's eternal keeping.

Have a blessed week!     Pastor Jack +              www.oursaviorelca.com

 Intergenerational Family Choir!

The Intergenerational Summer Family Choir sang and played instruments this Sunday in worship, thank you to all of the singers ages 7 to 97 for leading the song of the church and offering your musical gifts!  Consider joining them the next time they sing on July 21st.

Life Out Of Death....

OSE NEWS
June 10, 2013

ELCA

Each one of us has a story, or perhaps several stories, of major or minor events in our lives of God bringing Life out of a Death-like experience.  Worship this past weekend had that theme running through it, in our prayers, readings, hymns and more.  That's what God is about: bringing life where there was death, hope where there was hopelessness, light where there was darkness, faith where there was fear, etc.  I don't think I've ever forwarded a video before in this Our Savior E-news, but the following video has a "life out of death" kind of message, an example of something beautiful coming out of something seemingly worthless and something I thought very much worth sharing. Click here to view this Video.

Coming up next Sunday, June 16, we will have our first "Inter-generational / Summertime / Anyone Choir"!   Just come at 8:30am, practice with the others who come, and get ready to sing at the 9:30am service.   Doesn't that sound like fun?!  Hope you can make it.

It's also Father's Day, so come with your Dad.  Maybe you'd even all like to sing in that choir together!

We will also be installing our most recently elected Council members at the 9:30 Sunday service:  Karen Reed, Fellowship;  Len Frosina, Nurturing; and Clint Rahjes, Stewardship.

Hope you all have a blessed week, seeing where and how God is working to bring his Life to you or to bring his Life to someone through you!

See you in church.      Pastor Jack +     www.oursaviorelca.com

Life, Growth, Renewal......

OSE NEWS
June 3, 2013

ELCA Life, growth, renewal...who doesn't need that!   With the tropical warm temperatures and the summer rains (and it sounds like we're in for a lot this week) a lot of life, growth and renewal is happening as we look around at our lawns and plants soaking it all in and almost growing before our eyes.  So, it is with us.  We need those times of life, growth and renewal, in body, mind and spirit.  That's the season of the church year we have entered.  In worship we hear that Word which waters and renews us, but which also prunes and shapes us.  And we receive God in that meal at His table, which feeds us and strengthens us to live as God's people. Yes, this is a special time of the year.   And with our summer worship schedule with just our 6pm Saturday service and one service at 9:30am on Sunday it's nice to be gathered together with others whom we might not see from "the other service", and being able to worship and sing together in a full church, and the singing has been awesome!

Speaking of life, growth and renewal, another place that has happened has been in Pastor Clark's Wednesday morning Bible study.  For around 8 years, that has been a popular and much loved middle of the week gathering place as this class has been reading through the Bible.  This past Wednesday was the last Wednesday before the summer break for this class.   But even more importantly, it was Pastor Clark's last Wednesday for leading the class.  With age taking it's toll for him and Millie, he felt it was time step aside, as much as he's loved leading the class and the being a part of that group.  So, we had a great party following the class with all kinds of good food and conversation, celebrating and giving thanks for his time with us.!    The class will resume the first Wednesday in September, September 4, at 10am, and pick up where it left off, with Revelation chapter 4.  Many, many thanks to Pastor Clark for his long and faithful service in leading this class, as well as all the home visits he's made over the past years.  Well done, good and faithful servant!  We look forward to you continuing to be a part of Our Savior, but with less responsibilities.  God bless you and Millie!

As the summer now begins to unfold, may it be for you a time of Life, Growth and Renewal, whether your here with us in Vero, or traveling or at your summer home.

As we end each service during these summer months, wherever you may be: May Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, go before you to guide you, behind you to encourage you, beside you to befriend you, above you to watch over you, and within you to give you peace.

See you in church!  Pastor Jack +                www.oursaviorelca.com
