Roots and Wings!

In case you missed worship this past weekend, here's the question and answer from last week's OSE-News.   What are the two most important things we can give our children?   Roots and wings!  By roots I mean being rooted in God's forgiveness, God's promise to be with us, and God's claiming us as His own.  Roots that hold us fast in the storms of life, and from which we can draw nourishment and strength.  An important and life-giving gift!   But these roots don't just mean we are members of an exclusive, secluded club.

Roots like these give us wings: wings that send us out into the world for good, to be God's hands at work, to reflect God's grace that renews, re-forms and continues to breathe life into the church, our lives and the world.

Roots and wings: two important gifts we need to give to our children, but also two important gifts

God gives to each of us.

This coming weekend we get to continue to celebrate the gift of roots and wings as we celebrate All Saints Day!   Here is another opportunity to see how our roots are interconnected with both those who have gone before us and those with whom we share life's journey.   Worship will begin at the Baptismal Font as we remember all those who were Baptized since All Saints Day last year.  Then later in worship we will remember all those who have died since All Saints Day last year.   This is always a  most meaningful service as we remember and give thanks to God for those special people in our lives, past and present, and hear again God's call to be numbered among his saints.

Looking a little farther down the road, Advent is coming up.  This year we would like to get a new Advent wreath, one that matches our beautiful Paschal Candle holder near the Baptismal Font.  The cost is $250.  If you would like to give the new Advent wreath as a gift in memory of or in honor of a loved one (someone we may be remembering this coming weekend) contact the church office, or reply to this email.  Thanks.

Thanks...and as this week unfolds, remember your roots, spread your wings and be who God made you to be!

OSE-News and MORE!

October 20, 2014

This past weekend Jesus talked about those 3 things you don't bring up in polite conversation: Money, Religion and Politics.  But these are all important issues in our lives.

This coming weekend, Reformation Sunday (!), along with wearing RED, and celebrating the confirmation of 5 of our young people at the 8:30 service, we will hear about 2 of the most important things we can give to our children.  (Which also happen to be 2 things that the church and the Gospel offers to all of us.)  Come and hear what these are in the sermon this upcoming weekend.  (For those of you who may be out of town, these 2 important things will be mentioned next Monday in this weekly email.)

But whether it's 3 important things, or 2 important things, along with those, there is one most important thing of all, and that is being connected: with God and each other.  That connection, or lack of connection, is what lies at the heart of life's joys and sorrows, struggles and celebrations.  As we come up to Reformation Day and All Saint's Day the following weekend, we celebrate and remember how God has come to reconnect with a disconnected people and world.  That's a wonderful reason to celebrate and gather together!

For more times and places to be connected (and have fun, or be a part of a great cause), check out the special events listed below this email!

See you in church!    Pastor Jack +

What a Feast!

October 13, 2014

What a feast!  Not only at worship this past weekend, but also last Wednesday at the Pet Blessing/Wednesday supper kick off meal!  My favorite comment about the Wednesday picnic was from one of our youngest members who said, very enthusiastically, how much better it was to eat with a big group of people and how it even makes the food taste better!   Ahh...that really was a "foretaste of the feast to come".   Click here for a pictures of the evening!

With that theme before us this past weekend, that raised the conversation that has been started in the whole church about the practice of Holy Communion.  Who should take communion?  At what age?  How often? What are any prerequisites?  When many of us were growing up, we didn't start communing until after confirmation.  Now, we commune much younger members, and for good reasons.

In the sermon this past week we heard the story of Sara Miles, who, raised an atheist, walked into a church one Sunday, at age 46, went to the table when the Eucharist was being celebrated, took the bread and wine....and was never the same since.  God touched her in a powerful way.  Christ was present.  (You can read her whole story in her book, "Take This Bread".)

On that day for Sara Miles, in that church, none of the rules were followed.  But God was doing something.   I'm afraid we often get used to doing this thing called Holy Communion, and forget the radical, life giving nature of what God is doing here!  The Holy, Eternal, All Powerful God, is coming to us...in bread and wine.  We are feeding on Jesus himself, and in doing so become the Body of Christ in and for the world!  What a meal!  What a feast!

In the words of the refrain we sang with our Psalm, "Let us go now to the banquet, to the feast of the universe.  The table's set and a place is waiting; come, everyone, with your gifts to share."

And the celebration and conversation continues.

See you at the table!    Pastor Jack Diehl +

OSE NEWS

October 6, 2014

 Our Savior Logo

Come and Eat!  That has to be 3 of our favorite words!  I know they are mine.  And beginning this Wednesday, that is what we will be saying as our Wednesday suppers resume.  And we resume in a grand way, with a "Pet Blessing" service in the Memorial Garden at 5:30.  Bring your pet, furry, feathered, or otherwise, for a blessing and to celebrate all of God's creatures.

The Pet Blessing will be followed with a church picnic type of supper beginning at 6pm, with hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw, etc.  You don't have to bring anything. A basket will be available to pitch in to help cover some costs.  Just show up!  Many thanks to Thrivent for sponsoring this kick off event for the season!   You will see some of our workers wearing "Live Generously" t-shirts, as a part of the event.   "Live Generously"... you'll be seeing and hearing more about that as this Fall season unfolds.

But the feasting doesn't end Wednesday evening.  This coming weekend at worship we hear another parable from Jesus.   This one will be about a wedding banquet.  A similar theme, about a banquet, we see in the Isaiah reading also.  So, along with Wednesday, the word for the upcoming weekend will also be "Come and Eat!"   Come and be fed in body, mind and spirit.  See and experience what God is up to.
