Kingdoms of God at Work....

September 29, 2014             In recent weeks in worship we have heard several parables about the Kingdom of God (click to listen).  The Kingdom of God is something that takes shape in all kinds of ways in all kinds of places.  When I see parents bring their children to church (even though the kids may rather have slept in or done something else) I see hearts being touched, lives being built and the Kingdom of God unfolding. When I see young and old, rich and poor, Republicans and Democrats gathered around the Lord's table, I see hearts coming together and the Kingdom of God there in the middle of differences. When I see people pooling their resources to make a difference for good in the world, I see caring hearts working together and the Kingdom of God at work.     These are the things the church is about...being connected, caring, sharing.  This week at Our Savior another women's Bible study series begins on Monday evenings at 6:30 and Wednesdays at 7pm.  This is the same study on I and II Thessalonians.  Here is another one of those places for women can come together and nurture their faith.     A week from Wednesday, Oct. 8 our Wednesday evening suppers resume with a church picnic kind of event, hot dogs and hamburgers and all the fixings at 6pm preceded by our annual Pet Blessing at 5:30 in our Memorial Garden.  Here is another opportunity for coming together, and this time with God's special creatures in our lives, to celebrate God's Kingdom amongst us.   Finally, looking ahead to Nov. 8, we have another opportunity to come together and be about some more "Kingdom" work by being a part of Haiti Partners 5K Walk/Run event.  (See the information below!)  Another way that together we can make a difference in the world for good and be a part of the unfolding of the Kingdom of God in the hearts and lives of people.   Please also check our website (www.oursaviorelca.com) for more ways you can be find your place in the unfolding Kingdom of God in our lives, our community and in God's creation.   See you in church!   Pastor Jack Diehl +       We're so grateful for your friendship, and we hope we can celebrate Haiti Partners' 5th birthday with you! Kingdoms and Parables....

September 22, 2014             As a kid I remember hearing that parables were "earthly stories with heavenly meanings".  That's a little simplistic and not quite on the mark, but it does say that parables have an important message beyond the surface.  During recent weekends and for some upcoming weekends at worship, we are hearing a number of Jesus' parables.  What they tell us about is the kingdom of heaven.  But the kingdom of heaven is not just something later on, out there somewhere.  The kingdom of heaven is a here and now realm in which we are invited to live everyday.    This past weekend the kingdom of heaven was compared to working in God's field.  To some that may sound like, well....work.  But could that also not mean living and working with God and each other in a loving, trusting, productive, healthy, life-giving way?!  That sounds like the kind of "kingdom" I want to be a part of and live my life in!   To hear Pastor Shelly's sermon on this recent parable, click here.   Come and see what Jesus' other parables have to say to us...not just for sometime in the future, out there somewhere, but for here and now.    One of the ways we get to live out and experience the Kingdom of God among us is by gathering together in community on Wednesdays for supper. God Can Use Me!

Relationships....

September 7, 2014                 Relationships!   AAAHHH!  Relationships are where the best and the worst things in life happen.   Think about it......     At work:  I just talked to a carpenter friend who is going to start working for someone else after many years.  The main reason for the move is that he is not appreciated where he is. He's a wonderful carpenter, but not valued by his current employer. His new employer sees in him the real gift that he is.  Relationships.     This past weekend, through our "God's Work; Our Hands" project, we let the firefighters in our community know how much they are appreciated! See the pictures below.  We gathered food (coffee, cookies, peanut butter, pasta, etc.)  for the past few weeks and signed big thank you cards which were brought to all the fire stations in our county.  The reports coming back are that they were happy, surprised and grateful to be recognized and thanked for all they do.    Relationships.    At church and in our homes:  When there is a spirit of cooperation, love and mutual respect, that filters into everything that goes on and is such a joy.  When there is mistrust, power plays, unrest, that too filters into everything else, and is so painful.  Relationships.   This past Sunday (click to listen) and this upcoming Sunday in worship we hear about relationships and what God has to do with them.  Come and see and nurture that primary relationship, which affects every other relationship in your life, that relationship with your Creator, God our Father.     As a part of this coming weekend's worship we will begin with the commissioning of our Sunday School teachers and pray for this new Sunday School year.  Sunday School is one of those settings where those relationships with God and with each other are strengthened and nourished.     Relationships; where the best and worst things in life happen.   See you in church.  Pastor Jack + Weekly Devotions and Prayers: Taking Home Faith
