Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!    As we stand on the threshold of the Christmas celebration, we want to share a few thoughts and thanks.

For one, as we gather to worship you will see on our campus some beautiful new landscaping, including new sod, plantings, mulch and more, all as a part of wrapping up the new walkway project.  Many thanks to Mark Davia and Cray Little for spearheading this huge effort, to Trace Watts and Chris Essig for lending their man power to the project, and to a couple of anonymous folks who helped finance this whole operation!  It's all so beautiful and so much appreciated.

Also, our thanks to members, Lynn Silkworth architect and Lenny Hatala of Apache Construction for their part in the whole walk way project.  It's a wonderful addition to our campus, and pulls everything together so nicely, along with providing shade and cover from the rain for getting around.

Many thanks also to our office volunteers (bulletin folders, etc.) and all of our musicians for making this such a meaningful Advent season, and for the upcoming Christmas season, which will also be most beautiful.  This really is a special time of the year, as we celebrate God's coming to us with His Light that overcomes the Darkness.

Merry Christmas to US!  The office just received the gift of a new copy machine as an anonymous memorial gift.   Many, many thanks!

This year, instead of giving gifts to each other, the staff at Our Savior once again pooled what they would have spent on gifts for each other and is sending half of their combined gift to Haiti Partners and half to Luther Springs.   Both of those gifts will also be matched dollar for dollar.

The staff at the Florida Bahamas Synod house did something similar by pooling what would have been gifts to each other and making one nice gift through the ELCA Good Gifts program to provide animals and equipment for a farm in a developing country where the need is so great.

No matter what the gift, or to whom it is given, may all of the gift giving be a reminder of the greatest of gifts received, the Christ Child, and the Love, Light and Peace he brings.

Merry Christmas!   See you in church!   Pastor Jack

On Christmas Eve we celebrate God being born on earth as a poor Jewish child, whom we call Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The darkness of the night recalls Calvary, and the candles we light anticipate the candles of Easter, for this infant was born to die and rise for us. With the angels we sing, "Glory to God!".

Lost and Found....

OSE NEWS
December 16, 2013

During this season it's easy to get lost in the darkness, in the middle of all that goes on:  the sights, sounds, activities, expectations, and yes, also the loneliness, unrealized hopes, memories of times and Christmas's past, the "Christmas blues", and more.  It's easy to get lost in the darkness.

But this past weekend we heard another word... how to be found in the darkness.   On Sunday evening we gathered for a beautiful service of lessons and carols:  "Lost in the Night: An Advent Service of Hope and Expectation".  That evening held before us the hope and promise of the One who comes into our darkness.   As one of the hymn stanzas said:

"Rejoice, rejoice, take heart in the night, though dark the winter and cheerless, the rising sun shall crown you with light, be strong and loving and fearless."

As those who have been sought out and found in the darkness, those made "strong and loving and fearless", another stanza spoke these words:

"Shine your future on this place, enlighten ev'ry guest, that through us stream your holiness, bright and blest,

bright and blest.."

On Sunday morning God's holiness was "streamed on us" in a very real way through our children (including baby Heins and baby Boyle, each of whom were a perfect little "baby Jesus") as they told us the Christmas story in words, actions and song. A story so simple as to be told by children, and yet so profound as to be pondered by the deepest thinking and most reflective souls.  What a beautiful, meaningful way of hearing this age old story of God with us, unfolding yet today among us!

So, if you feel "lost in the darkness" of this season for any reason, gather with people of faith who also feel the darkness, but who also have "been found" by God's promise to come to us with a Word of Hope and Peace and Love.  For in hearing that Word, the darkness begins to disappear and God's Life-giving Light begins to dawn.  And this season truly becomes Holy, Joyful and Peace-filled.

Sprig of Hope.....

OSE NEWS
December 9, 2013

Out of what seemed to be a dead stump, came a sprig of hope.  That was the beautiful image before us in worship this past weekend, an image from Isaiah.   This a hope that isn't just based on wishful thinking, or "the sun will come up tomorrow" kind of optimism however.  This sprig of hope, coming out of the stump of Jesse, is the Word which became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.  This is a hope that is in the One who comes into those  places of struggle and despair with the promise that God is with us and that's God's Light is stronger than the darkness.  That's what makes Advent and Christmas such a wonderful season.   That's the message that this season is about.  That's what we gather around as we come to worship.

The other night I met a lady in the grocery store whom I know from the community.  We greeted each other with "How are you?"  She said how she is so frantic with the running around and making cookies, or whatever.  She did not seem to be enjoying or appreciating this season.  I couldn't help but tell her how this is one of my favorite seasons of the year, and suggested that all that craziness is the reason we need to be in church and get to the heart of what it's all about.  For apart from the Promise and Hope of the coming of the Christ Child, one can become lost in the night of all of those distractions.

That is the theme for this coming Sunday's special Advent service: "Lost in the Night: An Advent Service of Hope and Expectation" at 7pm, Sunday December 15, here at Our Savior.  Last year was the first for this type of service, and it was so well received.  Everyone there said, "I'm so glad I didn't miss this!"  In this service of lessons and carols, we have yet another opportunity to get to the heart of this season.  So, if you're missing that, or know of someone caught up the distractions of it all, or lost in the night, this would be a great time to come and bring a friend.

Also, next weekend (December 14-15), at our 11am service our Sunday School children will be sharing the Christmas story.    At the 6pm Saturday service and 8:30am Sunday service, we will also hear the story told but from a smaller group of our young people.  This is always a meaningful, special part of our Advent/Christmas celebrations.

See you in church, as we nurture that sprig of hope that is sprouting up around and within us.    Pastor Jack Diehl +   www.oursaviorelca.com
