Eye for an Eye

OSE NEWS

We heard in worship this weekend more of Jesus' words from the Sermon on the Mount, particularly his words about loving our enemies, praying for those who persecute us, and moving toward forgiveness. We were reminded that as hard
as these things can be to do we are able to move towards doing them by the grace and help of God. And we seek to move in this direction because of what it does to us if we don't. And because of what our world would look like if no one ever forgave. As Ghandi said, "An eye for an eye, makes the whole world blind."

Along with worship this weekend, the WELCA women put on a wonderful Rummage Sale on Saturday. The whole campus was filled with people. All of the proceeds of the sale go to help local charities. Thank you to the women for all of their hard work and hospitality to all who came through the doors.

Looking ahead, can you lend a bed? Host families are needed for the students of the Lenoir-Rhyne College Choir who will be here to put on a concert at the church on March 16th. The students will be given dinner here at the church, they just need a place to sleep. We need host families for 40 students! So if you can help out, reply to this email.

May God's grace and peace and forgiveness be yours this week,
+Pastor Shelly Satran

OSE DAY CAMP JUNE 16-20 - Grades 1-8

Cross   This coming Sunday we conclude the time after Epiphany by celebrating the Transfiguration of our Lord, when Jesus went up a mountain and showed himself to be divine. Then next Wednesday we observe Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, as Jesus walks up another mountain and shows himself to be human. Come to worship, to praise this Jesus Christ, to hear him speak, to look at him in Icons and to partake of his body.

Compassion....

If we listened deeper to this past Sunday's hard to hear Gospel reading, we heard a word of compassion; compassion that God has for his world and people. That is at the heart of the 10 commandments and Jesus' commentary on the commandments "You have heard it said, but I say...".    Although on the surface these words sound a lot like judgment, as St. Augustine said, "Any interpretation of Scripture that leads to hatred or contempt of another is illegitimate. One must not leave an interpretation of Scripture until one finds compassion."  It is that understanding that lies behind an effort begun by a former nun, Karen Armstrong, called "Charter for Compassion".  (Visit www.charterforcompassion.org for more information about this movement.)

It's also what lies behind a local initiative by many of us clergy in Vero Beach called "Compassion Vero".  (Visit  for  www.compassionvero.org more information about this local initiative.)   This is all just another way of living out the grace and mercy that God in Christ has shown to us.

For more ways to help you live out that new identity we have as people who have been death with compassionately by God, check out our website at www.oursaviorelca.com.

Have a blessed week and we'll see you in church!      Pastor Jack Diehl +

The gospel reading for this coming Sunday is familiar to many people: let the evildoer strike also your left cheek; give to everyone who begs; love your enemies; be perfect. These commands in Matthew 5 are hard to hear. Come to worship to receive both these words and God's blessings of forgiveness.

Be These....

OSE NEWS

Much of the New Testament is a commentary on the Old Testament, in the light of Christ. The gospel for this coming Sunday is an example of this, as Matthew quotes Jesus discussing several of the Ten Commandments. Come to worship, to hear these words, to pray for strength to live God's ways, and to share in the meal of forgiveness.

Blessed!

Blessed!    We were all really blessed again this past weekend as we heard the Beatitudes, read, sung and preached.  "Blessed are the poor in spirit...blessed are those who mourn...blessed are the meek...blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness...blessed are the merciful...blessed are the pure in heart....blessed are the peacemakers...blessed....".

Somewhere around 30 years ago I was thinking about having a personalized license plate for my car.  You have to apply for those.  "BLESSED" was already spoken for.   It worked out that "GRACED" became my license plate which I've now had for all of these years.  But that is very close to "BLESSED".  And that is what we all are!   BLESSED, and GRACED!   In good times and in bad we can live with the promise and the presence of God who both sees us through, and also sees through us...and loves us anyway!   As Pastor Shelly said in her sermon yesterday, being blessed "...feels like you have someone's unconditional regard"...and "...feels like you have worth---not because of something you did or might do, but because the unconditional regard you have is from the Lord."  Blessed, graced. What a gift. And as people blessed and "graced" we are then sent out into our lives and into the world to be a blessing to others.    What can we say to that except....amen!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Speaking of being blessed, when you are next around church, you'll have to stop in and see our new "Garden Room".  It is the room attached to the church on the north side of the building.  It has been furnished by a generous gift in memory of Dee Garrett by her husband David.  Dee and David have been long time seasonal visitors from Indiana.  After Dee's passing last year, David wanted to do something in memory of her here at Our Savior.  In addition to the furniture, the room also has a lithograph of Our Savior from St. Mary's Castle Gate, York, London, 1844 given to us by the Garretts in 2008, and a newly painted Our Savior Icon by Sandy Stevenson.   It all makes for a beautiful, peaceful place for meditation, small group Bible study and conversation.  We are truly blessed to have this new addition to our campus.

And speaking of being blessed and something new, if you've been around you've probably seen the new "Meditation Garden" area outside of the nursery.  It's beautifully landscaped with a flowing fountain in the middle.  Benches will be added and a little more landscaping to finish this wonderful project in memory and honor of the many volunteers who keep our grounds so welcoming and beautiful.  Many thanks to Mark Davia and Cray Little for spearheading this effort (and to Ronnie Lindner for lending his expert electrical help.)

We cannot live without salt or light. In the gospel for this coming Sunday, Christians are called to be like salt and light for others. Come to worship, to enter once again in the light of the baptized assembly, to hear the word, and to share in the meal of forgiveness.
