Help Camp Haven

CAMP HAVEN
May 30, 2014

"For I was hungry, and you gave me food . . ."
- Matthew 25

Can you provide a dinner for the men of Camp Haven?

A main dish is all that is needed, just a casserole, lasagna, hearty soup, pasta dish, meat dish, anything will do. Camp Haven (a ministry to homeless men in our community) does not have cooking facilities on site, and so the men eat a lot of microwave or cold food meals. Camp Haven is asking churches in town if they can help them out with their ministry by providing a meal for the men one night a week.
While our Wednesday Night Dinners were in session the men were joining us for Wednesday night dinners at the church (and helping with clean up afterwards!). While Wednesday night dinners are on break for the summer, can you help provide a meal?

What is needed?

A main dish for 15 people on any Wednesday night this summer. Just a main dish, they can furnish the sides. The dish can be cooked in your own home and delivered directly to Camp Haven by 5:00pm on Wednesday. Disposable food containers are available at the church. If you need to contact Camp Haven to deliver at another time, contact Miguel at 772-353-9733.

Sign me up!

Click here: Wednesday Dinner for Camp Haven to see what Wednesdays are available and sign up.

(By signing up this way through volunteerspot you will receive a reminder email the week you signed up, which is a help if you pick a Wednesday in August.)

Thank you for considering helping with this ministry of feeding others!

Midweek Looking Back and Peak Ahead....

Mid-Week OSE NEWS
May 28, 2014

I hope you all had a good Memorial Day weekend!   That's one of the reasons this is a "mid-week" email, instead of a regular Monday O.S.E-news.  Looking back, this past Sunday, following our 9:30am worship (into our summer schedule now thru the Labor Day) we had our annual Spring Congregational Meeting from about 10:35 til 11:15am.

At the meeting we heard about a newly established "Trudy Schmidt Scholarship Fund"which will be matched dollar for dollar up to $20,000 by an anonymous friend of Trudy's!   What a wonderful opportunity to help support our young people.

We also began some conversation about replacing our original pews in the church with more flexible seating.  This would allow for more over all capacity, more room for our music ministry and  the ability to rearrange the seating and position of the altar.   The conversation was met with lots of interest and input.  A sample seat can be "test driven" in the lobby across from where coffee and cookies are served after worship.

Our finance person, Vernon Khail, gave a finance report.  We are in a good healthy position going into the summer, with income for the year about $30,000 ahead of expenses to date. That always is helpful with lower attendance during the summer months.  Our indebtedness is well in hand also, with a balance due of only about $170,000 of "in house" notes to congregational members.  Many thanks to all for making such a healthy financial position possible.

Several new Congregational Council Members were elected including:  President, Vernon Khail;  Worship, Kari Rodgers;  Outreach, Jim Tardi;  Youth and Family, Michael Hyde;  High School Youth Representative, Mary Hyde; Education,  Rosemarie Mason; and Finance, Dick Eggert.   Other council members either re-elected or continuing to serve their terms are:  Secretary, Lori Nelson; Property, Mark Davia; Vice President, Nancy Ogonoski;  Treasurer, David Lanyi; Stewardship, Clint Rahjes;   Social Ministry, Ingrid Biesaart; Fellowship, Karen Reed; and Nurturing, Len Frosina.  Many thanks to all who have served (President, John Banitt; Worship, Marjie Silkworth; and Education, Suzanne Bolinger) and those who are newly elected or continuing to serve.    Installation for Council Members will be during worship the weekend of June 7-8.   Lots of wonderful gifts represented in these fine folks.

Looking ahead to the next few weeks at worship, with three festival weekends in a row!   This coming weekend (May 31-June1) we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus.  We will also be presenting scholarships to a number of our young people who are graduating or continuing their college degrees.   The following weekend (June 7-8) we celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the church, the coming of the Holy Spirit!   The following weekend (June 14-15) will be Trinity Sunday.  If you're in town, you won't want to miss any of these opportunities for worship and hearing the Good News in some special festival settings.  And remember, one service on Saturday at 6pm and one on Sunday at 9:30am!

Finally, below is some information about an event in our community for all Care Givers!   The Center for Spiritual Care offers some wonderful programs, and this is one of them!

VNA's V.P. Karen Ritchie on

Hospice Myths and Stereotypes, June 19, at 2 p.m.

As part of our ongoing Care for Caregivers supportive community for caregivers, Karen will dispel the myths and stereotypes about Hospice care that keep people from receiving the help they so often desperately need when caring for a loved one.  She will explain how Hospice works, and what it can offer patients and families to assist with their caregiving commitment.   Care for Caregivers, held 1st and 3rd Thursdays, offers caregivers time to vent, share helpful information and support one another.

Forty is a significant number in the Bible, and the church has kept Ascension on the fortieth day of Easter. That Christ ascended to God the Father to reign over life and death is another way to say that Christ rose from the dead. Thus the Ascension is another Easter Day.

Relationship!

OSE NEWS
May 19, 2014
Our Savior Logo
As the 50 day season of Easter moves along, we continue to hear in worship "relationship" language. This past weekend "home" was an underlying theme. This coming weekend we hear "orphan" language and a promise of the coming of the Spirit.  Relationship!  One of the most important ways to nurture a relationship is simply to show up, to be there, to keep in contact. That's why we said goodbye to a number of folks again in the past week or so, as they head north to spend some time with family and friends this summer, and nurture those relationships. That's what we staff members will be doing this summer also, juggling our schedules so that we can take turns and make those trips to reconnect with family and friends "up north" and elsewhere. And that's what we do when we gather to worship. We nurture our relationship with God and with each other.

This coming weekend, Memorial Day weekend, we begin our summer worship schedule, with one service on Saturday at 6pm and one service on Sunday at 9:30am. This is always a great way to get to worship with other members and friends of Our Savior who might worship at a different service from you during the rest of the year. In case you'd like to check out our church directory to help you put some names and faces together, you can view the directory by going to our website and clicking on "Church Directory" and typing in the following password: letyourlightshine

Also, this Sunday will be the first "Intergenerational-Anybody Choir" this summer. Anyone interested should gather at 8:30am to learn some special music to sing during worship at our 9:30 service. This is always fun with choir members ranging in age from 6 to 90+ years old! And along with singing, all children will have an instrument to play as well! So, come and join in on the fun.

Following the 9:30 am service on Sunday, we will have our Spring Congregational meeting at which time we will elect some new council members and share some "state of the congregation" information. It won't be a long meeting, so we hope you can join us for that.

Have a blessed week!   See you in church!    Pastor Jack +

In the gospel reading for this coming Sunday, Jesus says that he will not leave us as orphans. One of the places where we are washed, fed, embraced and sustained by God is at worship. Come on Sunday, to join with all the baptized to receive the Spirit of the Risen Christ.

There's no place like home.....

OSE NEWS
May 12, 2014

"There's no place like home."    Our Savior Logo

We see and hear that theme in all kinds of places and settings.  The other day I saw a sign at the entrance to a retirement community, "Welcome home".   Around Christmas we hear the song, "I'll be home for Christmas".   Often I'll hear a statement something like, "When I walked into Our Savior it felt like home."   There's something about the idea of "home", be it a good memory of a place that felt safe and secure, or be it the longing for a place that wasn't really a reality.

In our Gospel reading coming up this next weekend, Jesus uses imagery like this.  "In my Father's house, there are many dwelling places.  If it were not so would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?"  To be home...in our Father's house...that is the longing that is hard wired into all of us.   This past weekend, we heard how Jesus is the door, or the gate, through whom we get to enter that home, that place.  This coming weekend, we continue to gather around that idea.

As this week unfolds, what are the places, the situations, the settings, where you get a glimpse of "home"?   Or, what are the times you get to help someone else feel "at home"?  This is something we all need and want, and something that God knows about and provides for us.

See you in church!       Pastor Jack Diehl +
