Lent at Our Savior: Conversations Around the Cross

February 23, 2015

As Lent unfolds, we now begin regular Wednesday Lenten services at 11am and 7pm.  The morning service is followed by a soup and salad lunch and the evening service is preceded by a soup and salad supper at 6pm.   The 11am service is a "Morning Prayer" type of service and will include a special organ prelude each week and the 7pm service is  Holden's Evening Prayer, a beautiful, sung service.  The message at each service will be a "Conversation Under the Cross" as Pastor Shelly will be interviewing a different person each week (a professional athlete, a pilot, an artist, a law professor and more) about how God is at work in and through their lives.   You don't want to miss these.

Also, a big thanks to all who were a part of the Adult Sunday School class this past Sunday.  As a follow up to "Lutheranism 101" we are now working through an ELCA wide study "Table and Font".  This past weekend included conversation about our own table, without the railing, and what that means.  The conversation about that, and how we will be gathering around that table continues.  Pastor Shelly will be leading the class this coming weekend, please note the class will be held in the Sanctuary.  Come and be a part of some great conversation.

For more information about life at Our Savior, be sure to check out our website, or if you are out of town or home sick tune in to see our services on line, both live or watch at a convenient time, and "Like" us on Facebook.  Who ever would have thought any of these things would have been a part of "being church", but they are, and they are all good ways to stay connected and be in community with one another, even when we are separated by time or distance.

But the best is just being in church together.      See you there!

Applause for a Sermon?

February 16, 2015

Applause for a sermon?    Lutherans aren't big on applauding in church.  What happens in church aren't "performances" that are usually met with applause.  What happens is church is giving glory to God, not to "performers".  But sometimes an "applause" is just a natural reaction or response that wells up from within, and can't be held back.    That sometimes is a response to something our children do in church,  either because we are moved by their contribution or because we feel it's a way to affirm their participation.

But sermons?  This past Sunday however was the exception.  Rev. Dr. Fred Meuser was our guest "seminarian" for this year's "Seminary Weekend".  This weekend just happened to fall on the last Sunday of the season of Epiphany this year, Transfiguration Sunday.  And we were "transfigured", transformed by his being with us and the Good Word he shared and the 11:00 service responded with an affirming applause, it was a way of shouting Amen and Alleluia all at once.  And the fact that he was able to preach such a great sermon, along with leading the adult Sunday School class between the services, was all the more remarkable since he is 91 years old, and drove to Vero with his wife from Orlando where he lives, to be with us.  He is a wonderful example that God is never done with us, as long as we live and breathe.  Click here to see and hear the sermon.

With the season of Epiphany now behind us, we enter the season of Lent this Wednesday / Ash Wednesday, with services at 11am and 7pm.   (No meals this week.  They will resume next Wednesday).  Ash Wednesday is a day when we look in the eye things that the world likes to try to deny or avoid even thinking about: death and repenting.  Come and see why we can and should think about those things as we enter this season of Lent and what the ashes on our foreheads say about those things.

Then looking ahead, beginning next Sunday during the adult Sunday School class we will begin some conversation about communion practices across the church and also share some thoughts and hear feed back and comments about the altar rail being removed from around the altar.  This will all make for some good conversation as we continue to live into being God's people in the world today.

Finally, this coming weekend the Women of the ELCA will have a Rummage Sale on Saturday 8am - 2pm.  You can bring in donations for the sale all week between 9am and 3pm.  Proceeds go to a number of local community needs.   The Blood Mobile will also be on sight to receive donations on Saturday morning.

Signs of the Season!

February 9, 2015

Our Savior Logo

Signs of the season!  Along with the little brown "fuzzies" from the oak trees, and the yellow dust pollen from the pine trees, (and all the sneezing that goes with all of that) more signs of the season will be happening in church this weekend as we celebrate Transfiguration Sunday.

Being the last Sunday before Lent our children will be locking up our "Alleluias" at the end of worship, to be held in secret until Easter morning.  The word "Lent" comes from an old English word referring to the "lengthening of the days", as we've been seeing, with the sun coming up earlier and going down later.  Ahhhh ....... all signs of the season.

Along with this new season in our environment and our liturgical calendar, how might be this be a new season for you spiritually? We all need at times to step back, reflect, assess and nurture our relationship with God.   Lent can be that special season for doing that and you can have a sneak peak below at one way we are going to do that as a congregation this Lent with Grace & Peace.  So plan on joining us either in person, or if you are homebound or out of town, join us via our webcast services (either live or delayed...whatever works best for you) and let this season be one of growth and life and nurturing for you.

This year our "Seminary Weekend" will also take place on this Transfiguration Weekend.  Our guest will be the Rev. Dr. Fred Meuser, President Emeritus of Trinity Seminary in Columbus OH.  Dr. Meuser is a delightful person with a wealth of experience and good humor to share.  Be sure to join us this weekend and give him a warm Our Savior welcome.

This coming Wednesday, our Wednesday supper will be a partial potluck.  The main dish will be Mojo Pork on Authentic Cuban Bread fresh from Ybor City (awesome stuff!) made by our own Ryan Hostler, along with a few other things.  If you can bring a side dish or dessert, that would help fill out the menu.  These Wednesday suppers have been so good and so much fun!   Hope you can join us.

Good Spirit or Bad Spirit?

February 2, 2015

Our Savior Logo

Good spirit/bad spirit.   We all have experienced both of those.  "There's a good spirit about that place." or "I felt a bad spirit there."   Those things are hard to put your finger on, but we know what they are.   They happen in our workplaces, in social gatherings, in our families, in our own hearts, etc...

When I feel that "bad spirit" working on me, I think of the words to a part of the liturgy which many of us grew up with, which is from the Psalms: "Create in me a clean heart O God and renew a right spirit within me."    And God can and does do that.

For those of you who couldn't join us at worship this past weekend, you can go to our website, listen to the service and hear that Word which makes all things new and "renews a right spirit within" us.  You will hear that Life giving Word, not only in the readings and sermon, but also in the music of our worship.

Martin Luther once said, "Next to theology, I give music the highest place of honor".  Through music, God can lift our spirits and breathe hope and life into us.  We experience that in worship on a regular basis.  (Just tune in and listen to our children's choir from this past weekend and you'll see what I mean!)

This coming Thursday at 7pm, as a part of our Worship and Fine Arts Series, you can experience some wonderful music at the Vero Beach Performing Arts Center from the St. Olaf Orchestra.  Tickets are available in the church office for only $10 each, or at the door, for a little more.  Students are free.   Come and have your spirits lifted with some great music by some wonderful, talented young musicians from St. Olaf College in Northfield MN, one of our Lutheran colleges.
