Fifth Day of Christmas

So may the love and light of Christ carry you into 2015.   Thank you for all of your cards, well wishes, and gifts to us as your pastors and staff. We are all so touched by your kindness, encouragement, and love!   This coming weekend we celebrate Epiphany and the visit of the Wise Men in worship. Come and kneel down with the Magi as they present their gifts to the newborn King. Sunday School and Children's Choir resume at 9:45am this Sunday. A new adult class begins, Lutheranism 101, for all who want to catch up or review the basics of the Lutheran tradition (9:45am in the Quiet Room).   Didn't the new organ sound wonderful on Christmas (those chimes!)? December 22, 2014             The longest night is past.  From here on the days will be getting longer and the nights shorter.  It's no coincidence that we celebrate Jesus birth at this time of the year.  While many primitive cultures celebrated the returning of the light, the beginning of the lengthening of days, the early Christians said, "Hey, the True Light of the world has come!  Now is the time to celebrate the fulfillment of the prophecy "...the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot put it out!"   And so we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the true Light of the world.  Our Christmas trees, decorated lampposts in our community, lighted homes and beautiful light displays all are reminders of this Light of the world, Jesus, coming into our world, into the darkness and into our lives.    Come and celebrate the coming of this Life giving Light with Candlelight Communion services on Christmas Eve at 6pm and 9pm.  Special Christmas music, starting at 8:30 precedes the 9pm service. (Nursery Care will be available at 6:00 p.m.) Please note both Christmas Services will be webcast live, link available at www.oursaviorelca.com or click here. Then on Christmas morning at 11am we gather again for a Christmas Day communion service.  That will be followed by our annual "Home Alone" Christmas Day dinner in the Fellowship Hall at noon.   What a wonderful way to celebrate God's coming to us; being gathered together for a great meal and conversation.  This is free and our gift to the community.  If you know anyone who will be alone on Christmas, tell them to come on by.   Finally, Our Savior received a great Christmas gift this past week.  Many thanks to one of our own, Dave Siperek, a local insurance man, who helped us reach a settlement with our insurance company for our organ which was damaged this past summer in a lightening storm.  With the insurance settlement and a number of generous gifts from you, the people of Our Savior,  we only need about $4000 more to finish paying off the new organ.   This is a beautiful, state of the art, instrument, which will be dedicated Epiphany weekend, Jan. 3-4.  If you are interested in helping sponsor the dedication recital please talk to Ryan Hostler, Minister of Music.    For more information about the life and ministry of Our Savior, please visit our website and "Like" us on our Facebook page.       May this Christmas week be filled with God's Peace, Joy and Love for you and yours.   See you in church!    Pastor Jack Diehl + Weekly Devotions and Prayers: Taking Home Faith

HOPE!

December 15, 2014    While "Hope" is one of the themes of Advent, seeing and hearing so many of our young people tell the Christmas story this past weekend in worship (at all 3 services) gave an extra meaning to the word "hope".   To know that God is at work among all of us, including the youngest among us ("Baby Jesus" this year at the 11am service was 5 day old Alivia Elsebough...yes, 5 DAY old!)  :-)  gives an added dimension to what hope means.     Hope is God's story being lived out and passed along from generation to generation.  Hope is what we saw alive this past week in our children.  (To see the 11am service, and maybe get a glimpse of our 5 day old "baby Jesus", click here.)  Hope is knowing God doesn't leave us alone in the darkness but comes to us with his Life giving Light.   So,  come join us as Advent comes to a close this coming weekend, and as we gather at the manger on Christmas Eve at 6 and 9pm (special music for the Holy Night at 8:30) and again Christmas day at 11am followed by our annual "Home Alone Christmas Dinner" at Noon on Christmas Day.   These are some of the places Christ meets us and the story continues to unfold.   Jesus is coming!  Hope is alive among us!   See you in church!    Pastor Jack + Weekly Devotions and Prayers: Taking Home Faith

We are an Advent People.....

December 8, 2014                "We really are an Advent people...."     That was a comment heard after the beautiful Advent Lessons and Carols service last night.  Throughout the service we heard words, music and carols of hope and promise.  And many of the words we heard were from Bonhoeffer who was in a Nazi prison...a grim, dark, hopeless place.  But the promise and presence of the Christ child was a Light that shined in and through that darkness. (If you missed it you can click here to view the service)   Often when I talk with folks about life today and the world's condition or our country, I hear discouragement, approaching hopelessness and despair.  And sure, there are plenty of things to make us feel that way.  But the question then is, in what or in whom do we put our trust or hope?  Do we trust only in mankind's ability to get it right?  Do we look up to and trust in celebrities or political figures who let us down? (eg. most recently Bill Cosby and other public figures).   To put our hope only in things or people that are flawed and/or transient, is to set oneself up for disappointment and despair.     For me, hope comes from knowing a God who can and does enter our darkness, touch lives, and make people new.  That's the God we have come to know through the Christ Child in the manger.  In Him, there is reason for hope.  In Him we see God not abandoning his creation to powers of darkness or to fallen people, but coming into the middle of it all bringing new Life.  In Him there is hope.  In what God can do and has done, there is hope.    That is what makes us an Advent people of hope.   Come, Lord Jesus!   See you in church!      Pastor A.C.
