Our Savior LogoAs living sacrifices sent into the world by the living God we will have the opportunity the next two weekends in worship to think about and act on how we are each called to be a living sacrifice, giving of ourselves in all kinds of ways.  And what a blessing and source of peace and joy that is.

Next weekend is Labor Day weekend.  As has become a tradition for us at Our Savior, we invite everyone to wear to worship what they normal wear to work.  We will also have a bulletin board in church entitled "God's Work; Our Hands" on which we invite everyone to place a business card or a note (sticky notes and pens will be available) to say what is your vocation in everyday life.   Worship will also include special prayers for the various callings we live out.  So, come celebrate how God calls you to live out your life everyday.

Labor Day weekend will also be the final weekend of our summer worship schedule, with worship at 6pm Saturday and 9:30am Sunday.  Beginning the weekend of Sept. 6-7 we return to our regular schedule of worship on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 8:30 and 11am.

Also Sept. 6-7 will be our "God's Work; Our Hands" service project, as we join other ELCA congregations around the country in some kind of service to our community.  This year, we will be serving those who serve others.  During these weekends leading up to Sept. 6-7 we are gathering some special food items and other things that we will be bringing to the fire stations in our community, along with a big "Thank You" card that everyone will have the opportunity to sign.  Be sure to pick up a post it note on the board in the narthex for an item to give to our local firefighters.

Sunday of that weekend, Sept. 7, 9:45-10:45 AM will also be Sunday School registration as kids and families can sign up for Sunday School, meet your teachers, see what lies ahead for this year.   There will also be time to be a part of the "God's Work; Our Hands" project that day.

This is an exciting time of the year as a new school year begins and a new season is about to unfold for us at Our Savior.   Please join us and be a part of these things and so much more that will be coming down the road.

See you in church!    Pastor Jack Diehl +

Let Your Light Shine!

Happy first day of school!  This past weekend we had a great start to the school year with our annual Backpack Blessing at the end of worship which included blessings for students, teachers and all support staff in our school system.  See the picture below where everyone was saying "Let your light shine!"   That's a lot of Light shining into our schools this week!

With school beginning our Pastor Shelly is also back from vacation.  It will be good for us all to be back together again!

This time of year also means that there are only 2 more weekends where we are in our summer schedule.  Labor Day weekend is the last weekend of worship on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 9:30am.  Beginning the weekend of September 6-7 we resume our regular schedule with worship on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 8:30 and 11am.

That weekend we join other ELCA congregations around the country for a "God's Work; Our Hands" weekend.  This year we are gathering supplies to bring to the 12 fire houses in our county as a way of thanking and serving those who serve others. More to come on that as we get closer.  Sunday School begins Sunday September 14, with registration on Sunday September 7.

As we gather for worship this coming weekend, we hear that Peter received the "keys of the kingdom." In our baptism it is as if we too have received keys that open God to us and open ourselves to others. Come to worship; be opened to the word and at the table.

See you in church!  Pastor Jack Diehl + www.oursaviorelca.com

Back to School!

Back to school!

Next Monday, Aug. 18, school starts in Indian River County.  Our teachers are already back in the classrooms this week.   In order to send our kids and teachers off into the new year on the right foot, this coming weekend will be our "Blessing of the Backpacks" weekend at the end of worship.   All of our children, teachers, and anyone who works in the school system, will be invited to come forward with backpacks, lesson plans, etc. for a special blessing as this new school year begins.

And speaking of school, Vicar Bonnie Lanyi, who was our preacher this past weekend (click to listen!), is now in the last months of her seminary education!  That whole process began here at Our Savior when Bonnie was our parish nurse.  During that time she felt the call to be a pastor, and began in a "distance learning" program through Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN.  As a part of that program, she is now a Vicar or "Student Pastor", at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Sebastian.  By Spring next year, she will be ready for ordination!   This past weekend we were grateful and pleased to have her back at Our Savior (since Pastor Shelly is on vacation and I had to be at a meeting at Lutherock.)  What a joy and pleasure it is to see a wonderful future pastor of the church growing into that position, and for us to be a part of that.

Look forward to seeing you in church this coming weekend as we will hear how God's house is meant to be a house of prayer for all people, exemplified by an outsider's unflinching faith in what Jesus can do, and as we then, also with unflinching faith, send our children off with a blessing into the new school year.

I Love You, Come and Eat!

August 4, 2014

A WHOLE LOT of food was gathered this past weekend and brought to Camp Haven and Harvest Food and Outreach this morning where the miracle of Jesus' feeding the 5000 continues to unfold yet today.

So many times the world's problems, or even our own problems, seem just way too big. What could we possibly do to make a difference?!  How can we even make a dent?  That's what the disciples felt like when all those hungry people were there in front of them.  But as the story unfolds, what seemed like a meager amount of 5 little loaves and 2 fish that the disciples had, when given to Jesus who blessed it and gave it back, was more than enough for all.   (Click to listen to the sermon!)

That's why we continue to gather to worship together...to hand over to God the challenges before us, and offer whatever we can, as meager as it may seem.  But in God's hands, challenges are met, miracles unfold, people are fed, needs are met, we are blessed.

See you in church!     Pastor Jack  Diehl +

Do you know the old song that goes "When the storms of life are raging, stand by me"? That song is about the gospel for this coming Sunday. Come to worship, to encounter Christ standing by you, no matter the storms, and to stand with others, to be the presence of Christ for them.
