God's Work Our Hands Sunday!

August 31, 2015

Our Savior Logo

As I write this, a few days before this goes out on Monday, August 31, we are all watching the weather to see if Hurricane Erika will be hitting or missing us as you read this!  Interesting!  If it's hitting us, I hope all are weathering the storm ok.  If it misses, that's good too.  Our Prayers go out to any and all who feel it's winds and rain.

Looking ahead, the weekend of Sept. 12-13, will be our annual "God's Work, Our Hands" weekend, in conjunction with ELCA congregations from around the country who are planning on some kind of service project to take place that weekend.  This year, in cooperation with "Every Dream has a Price", which is in the process of building housing for veterans, we are gathering new underwear, undershirts, and socks for Vietnam Veterans.  You can bring any of these items to worship the weekend of Sept. 12-13 and place them in the laundry baskets. Then after 8:30 worship or before 11:00 worship please stop in the Fellowship Hall and write a word of encouragement on provided cards that will be given along with the socks, undershirts, and underwear to our veterans. This is just one way we can live out what St. Theresa of Avila spoke about when she said, "Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours."  Thanks ahead of time for being Christ's hands in this way, reaching out to help some of our Vietnam veterans.

Also, Labor Day weekend coming up, Sept. 5-6 will be the last weekend of our summer worship schedule with worship at 6pm on Saturday and 9:30am on Sunday.  The following "God's Work, Our Hands" weekend (Sept. 12-13), we go back to worship on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 8:30 and 11am. In between services, 9:45 to 10:45am we will have both the Sunday School Registration Open House in the Sunday School Courtyard and Writing Notes of Encouragement for Veterans in the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to join us for all of that.

May God bless you, and keep us all safe,  in this peak of the hurricane season especially!

Peace and Joy,    Pastor Jack +

Milestones....

August 17, 2015

Our Savior Logo

This past Sunday a couple of major milestones happened:  one for Jack Canteenwalla (our newest grandson) and one for Henry Alan Nesper, son of Jefffrey and Megan Nesper (grandson of Terry and Lousia Zovic and Bill and Val Nesper).  I was at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Longwood, our daughter and son in law's home congregation, for baby Jack's baptism, and Henry Alan was bapbized here.  By all the family and friends gathered at both places you can tell these were big milestones for the babies and the families.

When I think of "milestones" I can't help but translate that into nautical language, and I think channel markers, like in the Indian River.  The channel markers, like milestones, are reference points which let you know where you are, where you are going and if you are on the right track.  Baptism is that great early milestone or channel marker which says to the child and to the families, who and whos this child is, and what direction and shape his or her life will take as a chosen, beloved, child of God.  All good reason for family and friends to gather and celebrate as so many of us did this past weekend, both here at Our Savior and at St. Stephen's in Longwood.

This coming weekend we get to celebrate another milestone, both for our minister of music and for us as a congregation as our bishop, Bob Schaefer will be joining us for Ryan's commissioning as an Associate in Ministry in the ELCA.  This is a rostered position, like a pastor who is "set apart" for "Word and Sacrament" ministry, except an Associate in Ministry is "set apart" for "Word and Service" ministry.  Some AIMs serve as teachers, or administrators, or in Ryan's case, as a minister of music.  This is an important milestone for him as well as for our congreation as he joins the ranks of other rostered leader in the ELCA, set apart for ministry in his particular area of service.   His commissioning will be at the 9:30am service on Sunday followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.  Another happy milestone, or channel marker, along life's journey, indeed!  Thanks be to God!   See you in church!

You Are What You Eat!

August 10, 2015

Our Savior Logo
It often shows!  Take the Flamingo and Roseate Spoonbill for example.  Their beautiful pink feathers reflect what they eat...shrimp and other food that turn their feathers that beautiful coral/pink color.

In our Scripture reading yesterday from Ephesians we heard a list of what people would look like who feed on the Bread of Life.  They speak the truth; are angry but don't sin or let the sun go down on their anger; work honestly so as to have something to share; let no evil talk come out of their mouth, but only what is useful for building up; put away bitterness, wrath, anger and wrangling; are kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ has forgiven them; and the list goes on.  All of these things and more are seen in a person who regularly eats God's Bread of Life!

Are you what you eat?  If the list of things above are of short supply in your life that doesn't mean you just have to try harder.  What it does mean though is that maybe it's time to look at what you've been "eating", then come to the table again, and make God's Bread of Life a part of your regular diet.  That makes all the difference in the world, both for you and for those around you.  You ARE what you eat!

The next 2 Sundays are the final 2 of our 5 "Bread" Sundays.  The table will again be ready, and there's a place at it for you.   Pastor Shelly will be back this coming weekend, and I will be at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Orlando with all 4 of our kids from near and far for the baptism of our newest grandchild, baby Jack Canteenwalla!   We will certainly be feasting together there!   But wherever you are, God's table is nearby.  Be a regular there.  There is always a place at it for you.

See you in church!    Pastor Jack Diehl +

P.S. Keep scrolling down to learn about a new cookbook that needs YOUR help!

Praise be God from whom all blessings flow!

My heart is overflowing with gratitude and joy. Our family is thanking God for the abundant outpouring of the many, many expressions of God's love and care over the years and especially this past weekend. My family is awash in God's grace and joy. We are SO grateful to the many, many people who made the service of Ordination and reception so incredibly beautiful.

Special thanks to Ryan Hostler, Pastor Jack, Pastor Shelly, Linda Palmioli, Nancy Ogonoski, Rachel Little, Beth Kray, Marilyn Fisher and all those who were a part of making this weekend one that we will never forget.

Our hearts are also sad to say farewell. Your witness to who God is in the way you live and serve has been a tremendous blessing to us. God has called us forward to serve Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Saint Simon's Island, Georgia. Our Savior, especially the people of this faith community will always be in our hearts. We will hold you close in our hearts and prayers.

+with much love and gratitude
