Another amazing morning at Our Savior!  This past Sunday was both the annual congregational meeting and some very special worship...again.  As I reflect on both of those events, there is a common thread that ties them together.  We are very blessed, and as a congregation have never been in a better, healthier place in our 50 year history!

The annual meeting reflected this in the great support from the congregation in sharing their time, their expertise and their financial gifts all so generously, along with the many good things that are happening in and through the various mission teams and staff that all work so well together.  Because of these things it was noted that Our Savior is often recognized and held up as a model congregation both in our synod and in the ELCA!   Wow.  To hear things like that makes one feel very grateful, but it is also very humbling, realizing how fragile the human condition is, and how it is all simply by the grace of God.

Then along with that kind of an annual meeting, worship also was amazing...again.  :-)  For this Third Sunday after Epiphany, Ryan, our minister of music, had two esteemed guest musicians, Bob Hudgins on bass and Jan Walton on saxophone, help lead worship.  These folks have worked with Ryan at his former congregation and in many ELCA events around the country, including the Florida Bahamas Synod Assemblies.  What a treat and what a gift to have them with us. I've never had more positive comments, from members and visitors alike, about how inspiring (and fun) worship was.  Check out the website in the coming days for some video and audio clips!

Having that jazz theme for worship really fit into this season of Epiphany as we have been experiencing different types of music from different parts of the world for our hymns, hymn of praise and other parts of the liturgy.  We have done this to underscore the Epiphany message is that Jesus, the Light of the World, came for the WHOLE world, all peoples, Jew and Gentile, slave and free, male and female.  That thought is even reflected in the different kinds of bread we are using for communion on different Sundays.  There's only 2 more Sundays left in this season of Epiphany...come see what they will bring!

Looking ahead, this coming Saturday, there will be an Altar Care Workshop at 1pm in the church.  Anyone who is presently serving or is interested in serving in this way are invited to come.  This will be a time to go over the latest changes and procedures for setting up the altar, as well as getting to know the other folks on the team.

This coming Sunday is "Scout Sunday", as we recognize all the scouts in our congregation.  This is also a day when the troop offers, in thanks for the support they receive from Our Savior, a pancake breakfast, served from 8am till 11am in the Fellowship Hall.

Have a blessed week, and remember, you are a member of the Body of Christ, a living example and agent of God's promises being fulfilled every day.

See you in church.      Pastor Jack Diehl +

Today, Jan. 21, 2013, was definitely an historic day for our country.  On this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, it was the inauguration day of our country's first black president now beginning his second term, 50 years after the first Civil Rights March in Washington DC.  It all goes to show that this great social experiment called the United States of America is an amazing work in progress!

I was thinking earlier today of my visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. campus in Atlanta this past Spring, where one can walk through the history of the Civil Rights movement.   While I was a child in those early days, it was still in my lifetime that, hard to believe, there were black and white water fountains, bathrooms and entrances to various stores or businesses.  While we've made a lot of progress in this area, there is still a lot of work to do here and in all kinds of ways in all areas of our life together. And the challenges just don't seem to get easier.  As Dr. King said, "We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope."

That last quote reflected very much his Christian faith.  That is something we all share.  In light of our worship this past weekend, not only can we be a people of infinite hope, but we are also called to be a people of joy.  In the middle of all of the challenges and changes of life, and the divisive, contentious world we live in, God calls us into joyful community with him and with each other.  And that really is something to celebrate and be grateful for.

Finally, speaking of joy, below is a picture of a handbell workshop which some of our ringers attended this past weekend.  Lots of joyful music shared both at this event and the Christian Unity service on Sunday afternoon when our choir joined the mass choir.

Coming up this week, the popular "Run 4 God" group will start another group tomorrow, Tuesday evening at 6pm (call Pr. Shelly for more info).  That was a fun group before and promises to be the same again.  And speaking of fun, this week's Wednesday night supper will be pulled pork.  What a nice way to gather and break bread with other folks from Our Savior in the middle of the week.

For more information on these and other things happening in and around Our Savior, please visit our website at:  www.oursaviorelca.com.  Remember if you miss a Sunday sermon, or would just like to hear the message again they are posted on the website!

Have a blessed and joyful week!    Pastor Jack Diehl +

What a treat that was yesterday afternoon, as we had a visit from those two talented and engaging Russian musicians!  It was amazing, and everyone was smiling.  Many thanks to Mary Pautz Klotsche and the Richard  R Pautz Lifelong Learning Foundation for bringing such a world class event to Our Savior, and making it accessible to everyone.  It was wonderful music, seeing old and new friends, and Haiti Partners benefited to the tune of about $3000!   So, many many thanks to all for making that happen.

Want to make good on your New Year's resolutions? A new Run for God group is starting up Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at 6:00pm. Meeting at Charles Park. The group is for all interested in growing spiritually and physically. Run for God is a 3 month program that meets weekly for devotions and a run/walk together with each person working toward a fitness goal by the end of the 3 months. If you are interested please reply to this email or call Jim Tardi (772-321-9820) for more details and directions to Charles Park.

Want to get more involved in things here at OSLC and get to meet a lot of really nice people? One of the easiest ways is to volunteer as an usher. If you would like to try this, there will be an usher training this Sunday (1/20) after the 11am worship service led by Karen Reed. A short time to go over the basics of ushering and show you how you can schedule yourself with our online scheduling. Meet in the sanctuary after the 11am worship service.

Also, this coming Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3:30pm at St. Augustine Episcopal Church at 475 43rd Ave., there will be an ecumenical service of prayer for Christian Unity.  Members of a number of congregations from around the county will be involved, including staff and choir members from Our Savior.  Hope to see you there.

If you like Handbells, our handbell choir will be participating in a handbell workshop this Friday and Saturday at the Community Church, with handbell choirs from all around the state.  Following the workshop there will be a free handbell concert from 4-5pm at the Community Church featuring the Atlantic Ringers and the combined handbell choirs from the workshop.  Doesn't that sound pretty cool!?

Looking ahead to Sunday Jan. 27, we will have our annual congregational meeting at 9:45am in the sanctuary.  This is an opportunity to look at the year past, celebrate what's going on at Our Savior, vote on a budget for 2013 and more.  Please plan on joining us for this once a year gathering.

This coming Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 6pm our Wednesday evening supper will be a potluck! Bring what you can to share.  But if you live alone and can't bring something, just bring yourself.  There will be an offering jar to help cover costs.

Finally, in light of this past Sunday's worship, "The Baptism of our Lord", remember your own Baptism.  That wasn't meant to be just a one time event, done and forgotten.  Each day remember that you were Baptized.  God claimed you and called you his own.  God gave you the Holy Spirit.  God said, and continues to say (as we heard in Isaiah 43:4...the only time these words are spoken by God in the Bible)  "I love you."   And as a people who have heard that Life-giving, Life-affirming Word, we get to share that Word, in our words and actions, with a world so desperate to hear such a Word.

Have a blessed week.    See you in church.    Pastor Jack Diehl +    www.oursaviorelca.com

Staff Travels!

Staff Travels
January 10th 2013

As of today, 4 Our Savior Staff people are literally all around the world! Closest to home is Ryan Hostler, our minister of music, who is at an ecumenical sacred music workshop for a few days in Naples FL. He is both a participant and one of the leaders of the event. Our parish nurse/seminarian, Bonnie Lanyi is in the Holy Land (Israel...not the "Lutheran Holy Land", Minnesota) with a group from Luther Seminary. And our Youth Leaders, Ed and Kelly Elsebough are in Texas at a Youth Ministry Certification School. These are the things which make for a good and healthy staff and which make for a healthy congregation. God bless them all with safe travels and good and inspiring experiences!

And PS...squirrel update....here is a picture of "Mary" the squirrel who came up to Pastor Shelly and Pastor Jack at church a couple of weeks ago looking for a home. Pastor Jack's 3 year old grandson, Andrew V, is holding her. She's doing well. :-)

See you in church! This weekend we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord, and get to remember and reflect on our own Baptism and what that means for us everyday. Then at 4pm in the afternoon "the Russians are coming!" You won't want to miss this fun concert. Kids free. A $15 donation per ticket will go to Haiti Partners. Hope to see you there.

OSE News: Happy Epiphany

OSE: News Epiphany
January 9th 2013

Epiphany of Our Lord

Following a wonderful Christmas season, we have now entered the season of Epiphany.  And what a great way to enter the season in worship this past weekend with a procession as our 3 Kings who brought the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ Child.  But it wasn't just about remembering that event.  The Epiphany message is that Jesus is for ALL people, Gentiles included (like the three kings), and that we can face the future, and this New Year, not in fear, but with faith that God is with us and shines His Light on us that the darkness cannot put out.  For the next 5 weekends we get to celebrate this season of Epiphany (a relatively short season this year due to an early Easter).  So don't miss any of it.

This is also a time to say welcome back our winter residents!  How good to see so many of you this past weekend.

As this New Year begins, several things begin and/or resume around Our Savior:

1)  Our adult Sunday School classes have combined for the next several weeks around a series, "Worship Matters".  This will also be a somewhat inter-generational event as our high school class will be joining.  This class meets in the Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School hour (beginning at 9:45am).  It's off to a great start, but even if you can't make them all you can join in any Sunday.

2)  Also, this past Sunday our children's choir has begun, with 12 kids!  They will meet every Sunday from noon til 12:30, right after worship.  What a great time they all had on their first get together!

3)  Wednesday suppers resume this Wednesday.  Supper at 6pm, pork and sauer kraut.   Youth Group meets at 6:30.  Choir rehearsals won't resume til NEXT Wednesday, Jan. 16, since Ryan will be at an ecumenical sacred music conference on the Gulf Coast this Week.

3)  This coming Sunday at 4pm the Richard R. Pautz Leaning Foundation invites you to enjoy a phenomenal concert here at Our Savior "An Afternoon in Old Russia"!    A suggested donation of $15 per ticket will go to support Haiti Partners.  Children are free, and it will be a fun, energetic concert that children will enjoy.  Two fun and engaging Russian musicians, Stas Venglevski and Misha Litvin (boy, the spell check didn't like either of those names!) play instruments something like a mandolin and an accordion.  This will be one of those you don't want to miss or will hear about later and think, "I should have been there!"  (There's been a lot of those things like that around here lately!)

Finally, a squirrel update.  The Saturday before Christmas, just before worship, a baby squirrel met Pastor Shelly, Pastor Jack and Paula Sample out under the bell tower.  She was hungry and cold (the squirrel, not Paula.) .  Pastor Jack picked her up and she curled up in his hands.  She found her foster home.  Paula made a bed in a little cardboard box for her during the service, and after worship Pastor Jack took her home.  She is thriving under the TLC of Karen Diehl (over the course of about 10 years a while back, Karen has raised about 50 orphaned squirrels).  The little squirrel nibbles on nuts and apples and mostly drinks a special milk concoction through an eye dropper.  She will eventually be released into the Diehl yard with the other squirrels.  In light of the season her name is Mary.  :-)

So, as a New Year begins, may the Peace, Love, Light and Joy of the past Christmas Season and now the season of Epiphany carry you into this New Year with Hope, Courage and Faith!

See you in church!    Pastor Jack Diehl +    www.oursaviorelca.com
