  Transfiguration

Having been to the top of the mountain where Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James and John this past weekend, we soon begin our journey to a very different "mountain top", Golgotha, where we see God's glory revealed in a very different way, on a cross.

The season of Lent begins in two days, on Ash Wednesday, where we gather to remember that we are dust and to dust we shall return.  But in remembering that, we also hear God's promise of redemption, forgiveness and new life.  Ash Wednesday services will be held at 11am and 7pm with the imposition of ashes.  Our guest preacher will be Pastor Ron Engle, a good friend and former pastor of Adam and Suzanne Bolinger when they lived in Orlando. No dinner will be served on Ash Wednesday.

This upcoming first weekend in Lent, Feb. 16-17, will be our 3rd annual Seminary Weekend as Rev. Dr. Dirk Lange will be our visiting professor from Luther Seminary in St. Paul MN.  Dr. Lange is our seminarian, Bonnie Lanyi's, favorite professor and comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the area of worship.  He will be our guest preacher at all 3 services, plus will lead the adult Sunday School class.  This is something you don't want to miss.

Looking ahead to the end of Lent, there will be a few opportunities for giving a special gift in honor or memory of someone.  For one, we will be purchasing palm crosses made in Africa which help provide jobs there.  The cost for these crosses for our Palm Sunday worship are $125.  This year, in addition to a new Paschal Candle, which we get every Easter, we will also be purchasing a new Paschal Candle Stand, which will better fit the area in the narthex near the font.  The cost of the candle is $225 (more than in the past, because it is a much bigger candle) and the cost of the stand is $400.  It is a beautiful wooden stand which will fit in with the woodwork in the narthex.  The existing candle stand will be used exclusively for the Advent wreath in the future.   If you are interested in purchasing any of these special gifts, contact the church office.  And for your information, the Paschal Candle is often spoken for very quickly!

Finally, looking ahead to Saturday Feb. 23 will be Our Savior's Annual Rummage Sale from 8:30-11am in the Fellowship Hall.  You can bring in items to the west end of the Fellowship Hall (jewelry, holiday treasures, books, hats, handbags, etc. but no clothing unless vintage or unusual...grandma's mink stole?) beginning 3pm Wednesday and no later that 5pm on Friday.

Also on Saturday Feb. 23, Senior Fest is happening at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City.  This event lasts from 9am til 3:30pm and is filled with wonderful speakers, worship, a nice lunch and great fellowship with other Lutherans from around the area.  Due to a grant from Thrivent, the cost is only $25 per person, and well worth it.   Please contact us by replying to this email or calling our office at 772-567-2253 if you'd be interested in going.  We'd like to have a group go together.

Thanks!  Now, by the grace of God, go out and be a transformed and transforming presence in the world as this week unfolds.

See you in church.    Pastor Jack Diehl +

Transfiguration/Transformations:

A Festival of Poetry, Art and Hymns

Sunday Feb. 10 at 4pm

"Transfiguration/Transformations" is the third event in our Fine Arts series. Both previous events were wonderfully received, and this one coming up has all the makings of being another one of those that you just don't want to miss. The service lasts about an hour, and as the others, will be inspiring and meaningful. There is no cost to this event. Bring a friend!

Also, speaking of special music, if you weren't in worship this past Sunday at the 11am service, click here to watch a short one minute video of our Children's Choir singing in worship:

And one last note along the line of musical opportunities, this one in the community. The well known international musical youth troop, "Up with People" is coming to Vero Beach. They will perform concerts at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center on Friday March 1st and Satruday March 2nd, 7:30pm. They are also looking for host families for their international cast members between the dates of February 25 and March 4. Members of OSLC have hosted Up with People cast members in previous years and said it was a wonderful experience. If you are interested contact Ashely Wright at AWright@upwithpeople.org to learn more.

One can do great things, speak eloquently, understand many of life's mysteries, have all kinds of things and more, but without love...that one has nothing and gains nothing.  It gets down to that.  But where can one "get" this love?  Can one muster it up from deep down inside, or find it on some kind of pilgrimage or retreat?  No.  As Pastor Shelly reminded us yesterday, the one place where one can "get" this kind of love that truly fills and renews is from the source of love, and being in relationship with that source of love, God himself.  "In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice or our sins.  Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another." (I John 5:10-11)  And I'd like to add to that, not only "ought" we love one another, but as a loved people, we "get to" love one another.  Thanks Pastor Shelly for choosing that Scripture reading from I Corinthians 13 from yesterday for us to think on and live out this week.  So, as loved, and in turn able to love, people we live out our lives, with all its complexities and challenges, but with that center...love.

Following is a list of all kinds of great things going on at and around Our Savior as the next weeks unfold.  Please take a look through, because I'm sure there is something in there for you.  (These are just highlights...please also check our website for more information and details.)

In chronological order, here we go:

This Wednesday, Feb. 6, supper at 6pm, Chicken and Dumplings.  Also on Wednesday, Hand bell practice 5:30, Outreach Meeting 6:30, Youth Group 6:30 and choir practice 7pm.

Thursday, 11am, Memorial Servicefor long time faithful member of Our Savior, Carl Hefferon.

Sunday Feb. 10 at 4pm "Transfiguration/Transformations: A Festival of Poetry, Art and Hymns".  This is another in our Fine Arts series along with the Advent Lessons and Carols back in December and our visit from the Russians early in January.  Both of those events were wonderfully received, and this one coming up has all the makings of being another one of those that you just don't want to miss.  The event lasts about an hour, and as the others, will I'm sure be inspiring and meaningful.   Hope you can join us.

Then already, Wednesday February 13 is Ash Wednesday.  There will be a service at 11am and 7pm with the imposition of Ashes, as we enter the season of Lent.  There will be no supper Wednesday evening, but beginning the following Wednesday there will be Lenten lunches following the 11am Lenten Morning Prayer services and Lenten suppers at 6pm preceding the 7pm Lenten Holden Evening Prayer services.

The weekend of February 16-17 is our 3rd annual Seminary Weekend!  This year, Rev. Dr. Dirk Lange, a much loved professor from Luther Seminary in St. Paul Minnesota will be our guest preacher and Sunday School class leader.  Dr. Lange has lived in the Taize community, and brings a wealth of knowledge and insight into what it means to be a worshiping people in today's world.

On Saturday February 23 our Women of the ELCA will be holding a rummage sale.  Donations for the sale (no clothes) may be brought to the church beginning Monday February 18.

On that same day, Saturday Feb. 23rd, a Senior Festwill be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City, just about 45 minutes south of us.  This event is from 9am til 3pm.  The Keynote speaker is Dr. Mary Manz Simon (daughter of the well known organist, Paul Manz).  Included in the day will be many interesting workshops such as: "How to Write Your Life's Story", and "Laughter is Serious Business" and "Avoiding Sr. Scams" among others.  There will also be a nice lunch provided and some great worship and fellowship with other Lutherans from around the east coast.  We'd love to have a group attend.  See Pastor Diehl for more info.   Cost is $30 per person.

Looking ahead, it's also Scholarship time around Our Savior!   How to Apply for a Scholarship? Scholarship Applications are available online. Applicants must be active members of Our Savior and accepted at or enrolled in an accredited college, university, seminary, vocational or other educational institution. Further criteria and application forms can be found at: http://www.oursaviorelca.com/contact-us/forms/. Applications are due in the church office by April 1st. How to be a part of giving a Scholarship? Our congregation has the wonderful tradition of giving scholarship gifts to help our young people further their education. Anyone can help with this by giving a general gift or memorial gift to the Scholarship Fund and/or by buying an Easter lily (or poinsettia at Christmas time).

And looking farther ahead, 2 more things:

1) First Communion Classes will be offered for any children not yet receiving communion.  These classes will be held during the Sunday School hour March 3, 10 and 17 and are for both the children and parents.  Call either pastor if you have any questions, but plan now to join us those Sundays.  The child's "First Communion" will be on Palm Sunday.

2) A number of people have asked about becoming a member of  Our Savior.  In mid April we will have several informational gatherings for all interested.  Watch for details as we get closer, or ask one of the pastors about these.

As mentioned earlier on, these are only some of the highlights of what is going on at Our Savior.   For more information about these and other events not listed, please check our website,  www.oursaviorelca.com.

Now, go into this week as a loved and loving people, into a world that very much needs both.      See you in church!   Pastor Jack Diehl +

Another amazing morning at Our Savior!  This past Sunday was both the annual congregational meeting and some very special worship...again.  As I reflect on both of those events, there is a common thread that ties them together.  We are very blessed, and as a congregation have never been in a better, healthier place in our 50 year history!

The annual meeting reflected this in the great support from the congregation in sharing their time, their expertise and their financial gifts all so generously, along with the many good things that are happening in and through the various mission teams and staff that all work so well together.  Because of these things it was noted that Our Savior is often recognized and held up as a model congregation both in our synod and in the ELCA!   Wow.  To hear things like that makes one feel very grateful, but it is also very humbling, realizing how fragile the human condition is, and how it is all simply by the grace of God.

Then along with that kind of an annual meeting, worship also was amazing...again.  :-)  For this Third Sunday after Epiphany, Ryan, our minister of music, had two esteemed guest musicians, Bob Hudgins on bass and Jan Walton on saxophone, help lead worship.  These folks have worked with Ryan at his former congregation and in many ELCA events around the country, including the Florida Bahamas Synod Assemblies.  What a treat and what a gift to have them with us. I've never had more positive comments, from members and visitors alike, about how inspiring (and fun) worship was.  Check out the website in the coming days for some video and audio clips!

Having that jazz theme for worship really fit into this season of Epiphany as we have been experiencing different types of music from different parts of the world for our hymns, hymn of praise and other parts of the liturgy.  We have done this to underscore the Epiphany message is that Jesus, the Light of the World, came for the WHOLE world, all peoples, Jew and Gentile, slave and free, male and female.  That thought is even reflected in the different kinds of bread we are using for communion on different Sundays.  There's only 2 more Sundays left in this season of Epiphany...come see what they will bring!

Looking ahead, this coming Saturday, there will be an Altar Care Workshop at 1pm in the church.  Anyone who is presently serving or is interested in serving in this way are invited to come.  This will be a time to go over the latest changes and procedures for setting up the altar, as well as getting to know the other folks on the team.

This coming Sunday is "Scout Sunday", as we recognize all the scouts in our congregation.  This is also a day when the troop offers, in thanks for the support they receive from Our Savior, a pancake breakfast, served from 8am till 11am in the Fellowship Hall.

For the many other things going on at Our Savior please visit our website at :  www.oursaviorelca.com.

Have a blessed week, and remember, you are a member of the Body of Christ, a living example and agent of God's promises being fulfilled every day.

See you in church.      Pastor Jack Diehl +

OSE NEWS

OSE NEWS
January 21st 2013

Today, Jan. 21, 2013, was definitely an historic day for our country.  On this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, it was the inauguration day of our country's first black president now beginning his second term, 50 years after the first Civil Rights March in Washington DC.  It all goes to show that this great social experiment called the United States of America is an amazing work in progress!

I was thinking earlier today of my visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. campus in Atlanta this past Spring, where one can walk through the history of the Civil Rights movement.   While I was a child in those early days, it was still in my lifetime that, hard to believe, there were black and white water fountains, bathrooms and entrances to various stores or businesses.  While we've made a lot of progress in this area, there is still a lot of work to do here and in all kinds of ways in all areas of our life together. And the challenges just don't seem to get easier.  As Dr. King said, "We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope."

That last quote reflected very much his Christian faith.  That is something we all share.  In light of our worship this past weekend, not only can we be a people of infinite hope, but we are also called to be a people of joy.  In the middle of all of the challenges and changes of life, and the divisive, contentious world we live in, God calls us into joyful community with him and with each other.  And that really is something to celebrate and be grateful for.

Finally, speaking of joy, below is a picture of a handbell workshop which some of our ringers attended this past weekend.  Lots of joyful music shared both at this event and the Christian Unity service on Sunday afternoon when our choir joined the mass choir.

Coming up this week, the popular "Run 4 God" group will start another group tomorrow, Tuesday evening at 6pm (call Pr. Shelly for more info).  That was a fun group before and promises to be the same again.  And speaking of fun, this week's Wednesday night supper will be pulled pork.  What a nice way to gather and break bread with other folks from Our Savior in the middle of the week.

For more information on these and other things happening in and around Our Savior, please visit our website at:  www.oursaviorelca.com.  Remember if you miss a Sunday sermon, or would just like to hear the message again they are posted on the website!

Have a blessed and joyful week!    Pastor Jack Diehl +
