Not long ago I replaced the old broken down shed in my backyard with a beautiful new shed. This one even was wired for lights! Was I happy! So, I ran a wire from the house to the shed, hooked it all up, flipped on the switch and.....nothing! ?? Rats. I changed the light bulb, thinkng maybe it was dead. I checked the switch in the shed and the connections at the shed. Nothing. So I went back to the source. And there at the house discovered that one of the wires had become disconnected. Fixed! I thought of that after this past Sunday's Gospel about Jesus being the Vine and we the branches. If we look only within ourselves to try to fix what is not working (I need to be more loving, more joyful, more kind, more at peace, etc) it will be like trying to change the light bulb or fix the switch in the shed, and wondering why it isn't working...a futile and frustrating exercise. The only way we can become who God made us to be (loving, joyful, kind, at peace, etc.) is by going to the source, and being connected to the One who is the giver of all of those gifts! That is Jesus himself and the power and presence of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. When that connection is in tact, the gifts naturally flow from there. This coming weekend the readings pick up where this past week's readings left off. So, come, be connected, and let God's good gifts flow into, and through you. That's really what life is about in the first place. See you in church! Pastor Jack + www.oursaviorelca.com |
