At the end of this week's O.S.E-news (Our Savior Email News), there is a prayer, especially for someone getting older, which is timeless.  More about that later.

But first, we had a wonderful start to the Sunday School year with classes from preschoolers through adults.  In a world where there are so many voices calling, demanding, tempting, pushing and pulling at us from all sides, along with being together in worship, this time together on Sunday morning for learning and sharing could well be one of the most important of the week.  And parents, this hour is one of the ways we can help you to provide a firm foundation for your child.  Click on the picture below for a gallery of pictures!

This coming Thursday evening there are two important events going on.  The first is dinner at the Italian Grill from 5 to 9pm!  It's always a treat to eat there, but this Thursday the bonus is that 20% of all sales will help support "Every Dream Has A Price", a wonderful nonprofit organization that helps provide housing for veterans, older people and others in need.  For more information visit  www.everydreamhasaprice.com or call (772) 713-6883 for more info.   The second event is a worship service at 7pm at Joy Lutheran Church in Palm Bay, 3174 Jupiter Blvd. SE, with our newly elected Bishop of the Florida Bahamas Synod, Bishop Robert Schaefer.  All members of the Space Coast are welcome.

Looking ahead, attention all BOWLERS!   Saturday Oct.12 is "Bowl for Kids' Sake" at Vero Bowl.  This is a major fund raiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program, which serves hundreds of children in our community, providing school mentors to help children read.   $35 per person includes 2 games and use of shoes, bowling ball and a t-shirt!   If you aren't a bowler, we would love to have you sponsor a member of our Youth Group so that we can provide a Youth Team for the event!  For more info or to register call 772-770-6000 or visit www.bbbsbigs.org.  Thanks!

Finally, the following is a prayer especially for those of us getting older.  I came across this recently and was impressed with the timelessness of this prayer.  At the end you can see who wrote it and when, but read (or pray) the prayer first, then see how fitting it is yet today.

Lord, you know better than I know myself that I am growing older, and will someday be old.  Keep me from getting talkative, and particularly from the fatal habit of thinking that I must say something on every subject and on every occasion.

Release me from craving to straighten out everybody's affairs.  Keep my mind from the recital of endless details--give me wings to come to the point.

I ask for grace enough to listen to the tales of others' pains.  But seal my lips on my own aches and pains--they are increasing, and my love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by.  Help me to endure them with patience.

I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of others.  Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible that I may be mistaken.

Keep me reasonably sweet.  I do not want to be a saint--some of them are so hard to live with--but a sour old woman is one of the crowning works of the devil.

Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places, and talents in unexpected people.  And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so.

Make me thoughtful, but not moody: helpful, but not bossy.  With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knowest Lord, that I want a few friends at the end.   Amen

(This prayer was attributed to an unnamed  Mother Superior of the 17th Century...and was too precious not to pass along.)  :-)

The gospel this coming Sunday deals with something that concerns us all: money. Luke calls us "children
of light," and we want to see clearly how to
live our lives in Christ.
