Squirrel Update

Mary the Squirrel Update
March 2013

Some of you were there and have asked about this, so here's a little recap of our squirrel story.  The Saturday evening (cool & windy) before Christmas, a baby squirrel came up to Pastor Shelly, Paula Sample and me as we were out on the sidewalk under the bell tower before worship.  I leaned over and picked her up, and she curled up in my hands.  She had found her rescuers.  I took her home after worship and Karen, the real squirrel whisperer, took over.  (Over the years Karen has raised about 50 squirrels from various stages of babyhood.)  (Picture attached of the recent little church squirrel shortly after we got her home). We made a little bed for her in a cage and Karen fed her by a bottle for a couple weeks.  She ("Mary" the squirrel...named Mary because the Scripture readings for that weekend were about Mary) grew fast and did well. She found a home here with the Diehl's.  (Picture attached of our grandkids, Olivia and Drew holding Mary).   Soon she seemed ready to stretch her legs, so to speak.  We put her cage on a ladder and tied it to the tree in our front yard.  We'd leave the top to the cage open a little during the day so Mary could get out and run around in the tree.  But every night, for about 2 weeks, she'd come "home" and sleep in the cage.  (Picture attached.)   Soon, she decided to sleep somewhere in the trees, so the cage came down.  But in it's place we put a little "feeding platform" where we keep fresh water and meet Mary every morning and every evening (and sometimes in between) to play with her and give her some food. (Picture attached).  So, as of this email, Mary is happy, healthy, enjoying life (and getting a little pudgy...we're going to have to wean her off some of the nuts), and we are enjoying this new little member of our family.  (Picture attached of her at her own little restaurant.)   One of God's precious little creatures.

According to the old saying, if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.  Well, since it's coming in like a cold, windy lion, maybe on Easter (March 31) it will go out like a Lamb.  Hmm....That seems fitting.

As our Lenten journey continues, this past weekend in worship Jesus spoke to that question that every generation asks.  "Why do bad things happen to good people?"  He didn't give a simplistic, quick answer to this question, but did come to the heart of the brokenness by taking it on to himself...every bit of unfairness...all the way to the cross...and ultimately overcoming it.  He also gave us a parable about a fig tree, which reminds us of the mercy and patience God has for us, as He breathes Life into us, gives us Hope and enables us to bear good fruit, especially in the middle of the bad things that happen.  To hear the sermon from this past week on this subject, go to our website.  Also, below is a picture from the event I mentioned in the sermon about nurturing seedlings in Haiti.

Along with all of the good information on our website, attached to this email is one of the ways we can bear good fruit in our lives.  And that is by participating in a Circle of Faith build, with Habitat for Humanity.  Don Poust, one of our Habitat volunteers, shares some information about how and where this coming Saturday, you can get involved.  More information is below.

And looking ahead, on March 8, 2013, at 5:30 PM, there is a wonderful event, Educate and Celebrate, to support education work in Haiti through Haiti Partners. Come educate your taste buds, your inner art critics, and your hearts about education in Haiti! The event will take place at Northern Trust Bank 755 Beachland Boulevard, Vero Beach. Tickets for the event are $100 with all the proceeds going to benefit education work in Haiti. RSVP by calling 772-539-8521.

Also, you may have noticed a paper recycle bin next to the shed near the NE corner of our parking lot.  This is for recycling newspapers and office papers (no cardboard or phone books) and will not only be good for the environment, but also help support the Youth Group.  Thanks!

As this week unfolds, may you bear the good fruit of the spirit in your lives...love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, generosity, self control...gifts which a hurting, broken world, where bad things happen, are so needed.

SAVE THE DATE!  March 12th at 7:00 p.m. the World Famous Yale Glee Club, the Wiffenpoofs will be presenting a concert in our sanctuary.  More information and tickets can be found on our website and more information will be in next weeks OSENews.

Just a reminder to spring forward this weekend and turn your clocks forward one hour!

See you in church!    Pastor Jack Diehl +

Our Lenten pilgrimage continues as we (in light of this past Sunday's sermon) continue to look to God as "our light and our salvation", "the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?"  Ps. 27:1  If you missed Pastor Shelly's sermon, you can hear it on line by going to our website and finding it there (or click this link).  The closing story of Rolf Jacobsen is most moving, and with a wonderful bit of humor at the end.

Beginning this Sunday, during the Sunday School hour, there will be a 3 week class for all children not yet receiving communion.  The class will meet this Sunday in the Quiet Room off of the narthex.  It is for the children and at least one of the parents.  If you have any questions call reply to this email or call either of the pastors.

RECYCLE your newspapers!   The Youth Group has a special container next to the shed here at church in the northeast corner of the parking lot for recycled newspaper, office and shredded paper (not cardboard).  Proceeds will go to support the Youth Ministry, so you can recycle paper, help the environment and help the youth group all at once!

Many thanks to those who contributed to the Blood Mobile last weekend during the Rummage Sale.  The Blood bank people were so pleased and grateful.  18 people registered and 15 units of blood were received!

Finally, don't forget our mid week Lenten services on Wednesday (11am followed by soup and salad lunch, and 7pm Holden Evening Prayer preceded by soup and salad supper at 6pm).

First, it was nice to wake up this morning to our soft Florida air and more comfortable temperatures after our 2 days of winter this past weekend.   Sorry, President Obama and other visitors who came down for the holiday weekend.  :-)   But, Spring is coming!  And we know that, because it's Lent.

Lent, a word coming from an old English word meaning "the lengthening of the days", or Spring, a time of new growth, new life.   And so it is, or can be, as we enter these 40 days often with a plan to change something in our life for the better, be it giving up something, or taking something on, or doing something different.  Hopefully those will be things that will help us grow spiritually, nurture our faith and help us grow into the kind of people God has made us to be.

One of the ways that we as a community of faith help each other do that is by offering, in addition to our regular worship on Saturdays at 6pm and Sundays at 8:30 and 11am,  mid week Lenten services each Wednesday at 11am followed by lunch and 7pm preceded by a light Lenten supper at 6pm.  The morning service will be a setting of Morning Prayer, and the evening service will be "Holden Evening Prayer".  At both services we will hear voices of people who were with or around Jesus in his last days.   Between these services and the meals surrounding them, this is always a special season of faith nurturing and getting to know each other for us and our seasonal residents at Our Savior.

This coming Saturday, Feb. 23, will be a Rummage Sale from 8:30am-1pm in the Fellowship Hall.    This is one of the ways the women of our congregation reach out into the community with the money raised going to local charities.

Also on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 9am til 3pm there will be a Senior Fest at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City.    These are wonderful, quality events with great speakers and workshops, a nice lunch and good fellowship with other Lutherans from around the area. Due to some underwriting from Thrivent for Lutherans, the cost is only $25 per person.   If you'd like to go and car pool, reply to this email and we'll get you connected with each other.

RSVP by March 1st by calling 772-539-8521.

These are only a few of the highlights of what is going on around Our Savior time of the year.  Please visit our website for more at www.oursaviorelca.com.

Have a blessed week.    See you in church.     Pastor Jack Diehl +
